The Argumentative Script: understanding the reconstruction process of the argument network on the “Non-Partisan School” controversy

Abstract: When faced with a public controversy of collective interest, we often encounter arguments that circulate across various media platforms and networks. It becomes evident that as a topic develops over time, different positions acquire specific enunciative contours while still revealing similarities in the rationality employed to support a particular viewpoint. This recurrence, the recruitment of an argument from a network of positions available in a public dispute, and the relationships observed among these arguments constitute the argumentative script. In this talk, I will discuss the process of developing a methodological proposal for deriving an argumentative script, a method I developed in my master’s research. To illustrate this proposal, I will address the controversy surrounding the “Non-Partisan School” in Brazil, a debate centred on various proposals aimed at intervening in the official documents that govern the country’s education system.
