The Lancer men’s and women’s hockey teams both swept their quarter-final series to advance to the next round in the Ontario University Athletics playoffs.
Goaltender Julia Ouroumis held the Guelph Gryphons off the board and Krysten Bortolotti scored the lone goal to earn a 1-0 victory Saturday, the Lancer women’s second straight to complete the best-of-three series. Captain Matt McCready recorded a goal and two assists and Spencer Pommels, Ryan Green and Evan Stibbard each added a goal and an assist to pace the Lancer men’s hockey team to a 5-1 win over York, Saturday night in Toronto. The victory iced Windsor’s sweep over the Lions. The men’s volleyball team dropped out of the post-season Saturday, losing a quarter-final match to Waterloo. Kyle Williamson led the attack for the Lancers with 10 kills, while Will Alexander had 24 assists to go along with three kills. The men’s basketball team defeated the Western Mustangs 79-64 on Saturday to finish the regular season 15-7, good for fourth in the OUA West. Read “Phillip, Lancers dominate Mustangs 79-64, set to host OUA quarter-finals.” The Lancers will host the Brock Badgers in a quarter-final game on Wednesday, February 22, at the St. Denis Centre. Game time is 7 p.m.
The women’s basketball team won its fourth-straight OUA division title Saturday, defeating the Western Mustangs 76-57 to finish the regular season with a 20-2 record. Read “Lancers beat Western 76-57 on Seniors Day, earn another 20-win season.” The Lancers will get a bye through the quarter-finals and will host a semi-final on Saturday, February 25, at 7 p.m. at the St. Denis Centre.
Track and field teams prepare to defend provincial titles
Lancer track and field athletes captured two gold medals and three silver at the Silverston Invitational meet hosted by the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor this weekend. Jackie Anderson’s 11.26-metre triple jump and Jordan Langridge’s 1:20.68 time in the 600m earned top honours; silver medallists included Andrina Slegers in the women’s 600m, Leonae Nichol in the men’s 200m and Arren Young in the long jump. Both the men’s and women’s teams are the current provincial champions; they will defend their titles at the OUA Championships in Toronto, hosted by York University February 24 and 25.
