Lancers repeat as provincial track and field champions

It’s getting to be a habit.

The Lancer men’s and women’s track and field teams repeated as Ontario University Athletics champions in Toronto on Saturday, the 14th straight team title for the men and third straight for the women – seventh in eight years. Read the full story and individual results on goLancers.ca. Next up is the Canadian Interuniversity Sport national tournament, hosted by the University of Manitoba in Winnipeg, March 8 to 12. Both Windsor teams are defending national champions.

The women’s basketball team turned in a dominating performance Saturday, overwhelming the Western Mustangs 84-55 to advance to the OUA Final Four tournament, next weekend in Ottawa. Bojana Kovacevic led all scorers with 20 points and added nine rebounds; also scoring in double digits were Miah Langlois with 14 points and Jessica Clemencon with 11. The men’s basketball team was eliminated from the post-season Saturday, losing 77-67 to McMaster in Hamilton. Josh Collins’ 13 points led the Lancers; Evan Matthews, Junior Osuntola and Lien Phillip each added 11 points. Read “Men's basketball falls to McMaster in OUA West semi-finals.”

After dropping the opening game at home to Lakehead, the men’s hockey team won two straight in Thunder Bay to take the best-of-three series.  Goaltender Parker Van Buskirk stopped 48 of 50 shots to lead the Lancers to a 3-2 overtime victory in Saturday’s decisive game. Scoring for Windsor were Spencer Pommels, Brett Oliphant and Scott Todd – with only 27 seconds left in the extra frame. The squad now heads for a three-gamer divisional final against the Western Mustangs. Game one will be contested in London on Wednesday night, with game two set for Friday at 7:30 p.m. at Windsor Arena.

The Lancer women’s hockey team’s season came to an end on Sunday evening with a 3-1 loss to the Laurier Golden Hawks, ranked first in the country, in game three of the OUA semi-finals. Candace Kourounis xcored Windsor's lone goal. Read the game recap on goLancers.ca.

Forward Courtney Spoors was named to the OUA all-star team. In her sophomore season, Spoors notched 28 points. Her five-game goal-scoring streak was the longest in the league this season, and she tied for the longest point streak after registering a point in 12 straight contests.
