Organizing committee invites proposals for Welcome Week events

The Windsor Welcome Week committee invites individuals and organizations to submit proposals for events for the annual fall orientation, which this year will run September 2 to 8.

Proposals are due no later than June 29 for inclusion in the event guide that will be distributed in September and available on the Web.

Events must be inclusive and accessible for all, and must contribute toward at least of the desired outcomes:

  • Orienting students to campus
  • Building a sense of community
  • Fostering school pride, civility and tradition
  • Promoting wellness and inclusiveness
  • Enhancing a sense of fun and excitement
  • Welcoming returning students

That last point will be a focus this year, says Beth Oakley, director of the Educational Development Centre.

“The first week of September will continue to emphasize first-year student activities, but we are also encouraging the campus community to plan events and activities for all students through the entire month of September,” she says.

She says the planning, while in the early stages, includes consideration of events for residence students, a major concert downtown, a carnival-type event with inflatables and games, and a tour of Windsor as well as program orientation events and the traditional Welcoming Celebration.

Lancer athletics will play a role in the first week, with football home games scheduled for September 3 and 8. Lancer soccer will play through the month, and other sports events include a bus trip to watch the Detroit Tigers play at Comerica Park.
