Drama grads have high hopes for Dragons’ Den appearance

Drama alumni Mark Lefebvre (BFA 1988) and Kyle Sipkens (BFA 2008) are walking tall after taping a segment for the CBC television series Dragons’ Den to pitch an expansion to their business, Stilt Guys.

The program matches entrepreneurs to investors, and Lefebvre said the two hope to hire more entertainers to join their company, which sends the costumed actors on stilts to make appearances. Already experiencing multiple bookings around busy summer weekends, they want to expand their business so they don’t have to turn down gigs.

“Entering our ninth season together we are not only entertaining crowds at major festivals and events but also delivering unique corporate brand support, which is the key to our continued success,” said Lefebvre.

After a successful audition, they taped a segment on May 8 in Toronto.

“The season doesn’t start airing until the fall, and there is no guarantee we will make it to air,” says Sipkens. “But we thought it went well. It was a lot of fun.”

If their segment is televised, Lefebvre says, they won’t need a nod from an on-air investor to make it worthwhile.

“It’ll be a national infomercial for us,” he says. “They’ve estimated the value at somewhere close to $250,000 and who knows where the exposure will lead us?”

The Stilt Guys are still accepting bookings for the summer. Learn more at stiltguys.com.
