Provost Leo Groarke is seeking a tenured faculty member to take on a new role as the University’s environmental advocate.
A key figure in the establishment and growth of environmentally conscious initiatives on campus, the environmental advocate will advise the provost and the vice-president, planning and administration, on environmental issues, and facilitate projects which improve campus energy efficiency, reduce waste, enhance the physical campus, promote environmental sustainability, enhance student learning opportunities, and strengthen partnerships with the local community.
The position will carry an annual two-course teaching release and a small budget of about $14,000 a year.
“Over the past few years, there’s been growing demand at the University for informed leadership on environmental issues, and for the coordination and facilitation of practical, efficient solutions to the challenges of sustainability on campus and in partnership in our community,” Dr. Groarke says. “It’s an ideal role for someone committed to the University and our community, and who has successfully and independently worked for positive environmental change in the past.”
Sandra Aversa, vice-president, planning and administration, believes that this joint venture has great potential to enhance collaborative networks across units with very different responsibilities.
“We are looking forward to this opportunity to make positive environmental changes on campus,” she says. “The environmental advocate will be ideally positioned for collaboration, and to bring together people with varied expertise and roles across the institution. The potential for creative problem solving is truly exciting.”
