University community mourns loss of Economics department head

Campus flags were lowered on Wednesday, August 8, to recognize the sudden passing of Dr. Peter Townley, Head of the Department of Economics within the Faculty of Science, on Friday, August 3, 2012.

Dr. Townley began his career at the University of Windsor, on July 1, 2006, as Head of the Department of Economics, an appointment he held for a five-year term until June 30, 2011.  Following a recently completed sabbatical leave, Dr. Townley had just begun a second term as Head, Department of Economics, on July 1, 2012.

Dr. Townley  spent much of his career at Acadia University.  He held visiting positions at Queen's University, the Institute for Policy Analysis at the University of Toronto and the Malaysian Institute of Economic Research.  He also held the T.D. MacDonald Chair in Industrial Economics at Industry Canada (2001-2003).

Departmental colleagues say Dr.Townley provided valuable leadership during an important phase of the Department's development and that his informed guidance and encouragement will be deeply missed.

A family service will be held in Mississauga, Ontario.  A campus memorial service will be held in the fall and further details will be provided at that time.
