Cooper's Hawk safely removed from Dillon Hall

Dillon Hall had to be partially cleared out Friday afternoon and several classes were relocated to other rooms on campus after a juvenile Cooper’s Hawk was spotted flying about in the building’s cupola.

Classes were moved to ensure the safety of students and to allow a professional trapper to come in and remove the bird from the building’s central tower without harming it.

After repeated attempts throughout the weekened, Ted Foreman, a trapper from Bob’s Pest Control, lured the reluctant hawk down from the tower early Sunday morning and captured it without harm in a net. He said he would take it to a member of the Essex County Field Naturalists Club, who will band it and release it at Holiday Beach.

How the hawk got into the building remains a mystery. However, several staffers on site speculated that it may have followed in a pigeon, which was also found in the building. The pigeon had been trapped and removed unharmed Friday afternoon.
