Monochrome exam booklets win Senate approval

Senate decided at its meeting Friday to discard a policy that required booklets for mid-term and final examinations to be different colours.

The policy adopted in 2004 promoted the distinguishing colours as a security measure.

However, the academic policy committee recommended the removal of colours, noting that increased focus on integrity related to materials at desks has reduced the need for the differentiation by colour, that instructors are opting for other modes of recording final examination answers, and that the removal of colours reduces the cost of printing the booklets.

As part of a package of minor changes to its bylaws, Senate approved striking “periods of enrolment” as information which may be released in response to any inquiry about a graduate. The change protects private information and substitutes “date of graduation,” which is a matter of public record. See the full package of proposed revisions.
