Prof shares miracle of deer birth

An engineering professor who woke up a little more than a week ago to find two baby deer had been born in her backyard figured some of the photos and video she captured was just too good not to share with the rest of the campus community.

“Just the sheer joy of seeing this was amazing,” said Jill Urbanic, a professor in the department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering.

Urbanic, who lives in LaSalle not far from the Windsor Raceway, said she woke on the morning of June 8 to find a mother deer tending to her new fawns.

“They were still wet and she was nudging them a little to get up,” she said. “You can see how they were shaking.”

Urbanic said the deer spent most of the day in her yard, but eventually got up and followed the mother across the street and off into the nearby woods.
