Campus connects to conference on learning analytics

The Centre for Teaching and Learning is hosting a live-streamed version of the Learning Analytics Summer Institute taking place at Stanford University through Friday, July 5.

Learning analytics involves the collection, measurement, and reporting of information about learners and their contexts in order to optimize learning and improve resource allocation decision making.

“It’s a field that’s expanding rapidly,” says earth and environmental sciences professor Phil Graniero, one of the organizers of the local broadcast. “Researchers, faculty and institutions are really just starting to get a handle on how the mountains of data universities already have—and new types of data we don’t yet collect—can be used to transform students’ educational experiences.”

The local broadcast is open to the UWindsor community. Sessions will focus on the use of big data in learning sciences and education, ethical issues, approaches to data mining and intelligent tutoring systems, emerging problems in learning analytics, and the evolution of the data scientist in institutional and learning contexts.

Scheduled events take place noon to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Wednesday, and Friday noon to 1:30 p.m.

While individuals may access the livestream from any computer, the organizers hope the central location will also offer participants a chance to network and find out about each other’s interests and aims. Those planning to take part are asked to register at http://doodle.com/w3b3amcsgxhf3ist by adding their names and checking off the sessions they wish to attend.
