Football recruiting class boasts local contingent

Ten graduates of Windsor-Essex high schools are among a talented corps of 35 new recruits to the Lancer football team, seeking a third consecutive playoff berth in the 2013 season.

Head coach Joe D’Amore is looking to add to his line-up to make a longer post-season run. Among the headliners he has added are Beau Lumley—named MVP on offense for the Herman Green Griffins after scoring five touchdowns to lead his team to victory in the OFSAA Western Bowl—and defensive back Matt Gayer, a Cardinal Carter grad who totalled 48 tackles, three sacks, two forced fumbles and four interceptions on the defensive end this past season while simultaneously rushing for 902 yards, racking up 223 receiving yards and recording 18 touchdowns as a running back in his senior year.

The Leamington native says he is excited about continuing both his athletic and academic pursuits at the University of Windsor.

“Not only do they have a great football program, but the criminology program is top flight,” Gayer says.

He is one of six Essex Ravens athletes committed to the Lancers this fall, including Tarik Bonas, Robert Dundura , Clark Grace, Cody McCann and O.J. Sabageh; Nick Niforos of Sandwich Secondary, Richard Veenstra of the AKO Fratmen, and Kellen LeClair of Brennan round out the local mix.
