The Colour of Beauty posterThe Distinguished Visitors in Women’s Studies series will screen the documentary film “The Colour of Beauty,” Wednesday on campus.

Film offers examination of racism in fashion industry

The Friends of Women’s Studies will host a screening of the 2010 short documentary film “The Colour of Beauty,” at 4 p.m. Wednesday, October 23, in room 203, Toldo Health Education Centre.

Director Elizabeth St. Philip examines racism in the fashion industry through the experience of Renee Thompson, a model trying to make it in New York. She’s got the looks, the walk and the drive. But she is black in a world where white women represent the standard of beauty.

The film was produced by the National Film Board of Canada with the participation of Human Resources and Skills Development Canada.

Jill Andrew, one of the 2013 Distinguished Visitors in Women’s Studies, will moderate a discussion following the screening. The event is free and open to the public.
