Shadow of an axeUniversity Players will stage the drama “Blood Relations” October 24 through November 9.

Drama to explore “did-she or didn’t-she” questions of Borden case

“Lizzie Borden took an axe” begins the nursery rhyme derived from the 1892 murder trial of a spinster daughter, charged but acquitted as the only suspect in the murder of her father and stepmother.

Blood Relations dramatizes the gripping events leading up to a macabre end. University Players presents the Governor General’s Award-winning drama by Canadian Sharon Pollock, October 24 through November 9 in the intimate setting of the Hatch Studio Theatre, Jackman Dramatic Art Centre.

Director Brian Taylor says the question “Did she or didn’t she?” continues to fascinate audiences.

“We are attracted to this mystery because the uncertainty of ‘facts’ is compelling and continues to create news headlines as it did during Lizzie Borden’s time,” he says. “It’s an excellent thriller—and it’s one of our theatrical classics.”

University Players has extended the run of Blood Relations to three weeks, providing 14 performances. Wednesday through Saturday performances are at 8 p.m.; Saturday and Sunday matinees are at 2 p.m. On Sunday, October 26, a “Talk Back” discussion with the director and actors will follow the performance.
