Varsity weekend: men’s hockey and women’s volleyball at home

A midday match-up between the McGill Redmen and the Lancer men’s hockey team is a highlight for UWindsor sports fans this weekend. The Blue and Gold have partnered with the Windsor-Essex Catholic District School Board to host a re-match of the 2014 Queen’s Cup championship game in front of local students from around the region who will bus in to participate in the “Lancers against Bullying” campaign.

The Lancers are ranked no. 3 in Canadian Interuniversity Sport, boasting a record of 11-0. The puck drops at 12:45 p.m. Friday, November 14, at South Windsor Arena.

Women’s volleyball presents the only other varsity action at home, playing host to the Lakehead Thunderwolves at 7 p.m. Friday, and to the Ottawa Gee Gees at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Both basketball teams and women’s hockey will be in Toronto for the weekend. The skaters will face off against Ryerson on Saturday and the Toronto Varsity Blues on Sunday. The dribblers will tip off against the Blues on Friday and the Rams on Saturday.

OUA gives all-star nod to four Lancer football players

Ontario University Athletics named four Windsor football players to its all-star squad Wednesday: quarterback Austin Kennedy and receiver Evan Pszczonak as first-team selections, tackle Tai Pham and linebacker Frank Renaud as second-team defenders.

Kennedy tied the league record for career touchdown passes and ranked second this season in passing yards, completions and yards per game to earn his first berth on as a first-team all-star; he was named to the second team in 2011 and 2012.

Pszczonak pulled in seven touchdown passes this season, averaged 101.4 yards per game and made the first team for the second straight year. Pham is the Lancers’ all-team leader in sacks, including 3.5 this year, and Renaud recorded 36 tackles, two sacks and an interception.
