High school students to explore African Diaspora

High school students from Toronto, Windsor and Detroit will explore their heritage during the two-day African Diaspora Youth conference May 7 to 9. This year’s theme is GOAL: Go Onward, Aspire and Learn.

The conference is for secondary school students with interests in learning about the African Diaspora and how it has played a role in their development of self, says Deb Curran, Special Events Secretary, Humanities and Social Sciences.

“Students will participate in discussions and workshops around areas of effective communication, history and development of skills for the future,” she says.

“The conference provides an exceptional open forum to reflect on their own lives, and learn with community people and university students who have been through similar situations and have excelled.”

The conference will host BFA Acting alumnus Kevin Hanchard as this year’s keynote speaker.

Hanchard is known for his portrayal of Art on the hit series Orphan Black, as well as for his appearances in numerous films and TV roles, including Republic of Doyle, and Suits.
