Canvassers collecting contributions for student food bank

Residence Services is collecting donations of non-perishable items for the student food bank in Iona College in advance of the October 4 Day of Action. As part of the Higher Education Reaching Out (HERO) Project, student volunteers will canvass South Windsor neighbourhoods for contributions to restock dwindling supplies.

“It’s not acceptable that many people in the Windsor area and the growing number of college and university students are faced with not knowing how they are going to eat each day,” says organizer Jacqueline Mellish. “With food banks not being able to keep up with the demand, it’s time that we reached out and gave our neighbours and students a helping hand.”

She and her fellow residence life coordinators are issuing a challenge to students, faculty and staff to join the ranks of campus HEROs. Supporters may drop off donations until October 2 at the Residence Services office, room 49, Vanier Hall, or arrange for pick-up by contacting Jacqueline Mellish at jmellish@uwindsor.ca. Mellish also invites anyone who wishes to volunteer to e-mail her.
