Lancers men’s soccer headed for Alumni Weekend showdown

On Sunday, October 4, Lancer men’s soccer will play the McMaster Marauders in a battle between two of Ontario’s premier teams, on Alumni Field. Windsor comes into the contest ranked fifth in Canadian Interuniversity Sport, while the Marauders are seventh.

McMaster handed the Lancers their own defeat of the season so far, beating the Lancers 2-1 at Ron Joyce Stadium in Hamilton on September 5, in a tight back-and-forth affair.

Windsor boasts one of the top players in Canada: English exchange student Leighton Speechley-Price is tied for the CIS lead goals in goals with eight, helping the Lancers top the league with an average of three goals a game.

Defense and goaltending have also been bright spots for the Lancers this year. Windsor leads the CIS in shutouts, thanks to stellar play from goalie Kyle Vizirakis, who has recorded seven shutouts, including a seven-save performance last Sunday against a top-ranked York squad.

As for the Marauders, Toronto native Yunus Mollayev leads their offense with six goals on only 13 shots. McMaster has gained a reputation for being a perennial power in Ontario University Athletics, winning three championships since 2009 and regularly in featured in the CIS top 10.

Sunday’s game is scheduled to start at 3:15 p.m, following the women’s game at 1 p.m.
