New scholarship honours professor emeritus in physics

A new scholarship will honour one of the builders of the University of Windsor’s physics program.

The Dr. Lucjan Krause Undergraduate Scholarship in Physics will go to a student in physics with demonstrated academic success, who has made valuable contributions to research activity and departmental activities.

The first scholarship will be disbursed in fall 2016, with the head of the physics department choosing the winner.

Lucjan Krause’s children established the scholarship in tribute to their father’s years of service and dedication to the students at the University of Windsor in the Department of Physics. Dr. Krause served as a professor and also the department chair for over 20 years and is an esteemed physicist who has published more than 100 journal articles.

He was instrumental in building the department to be a world pioneer in atomic, molecular and optical physics research. Under Krause’s leadership, the department saw great growth and development, including the establishment of the PhD program in 1962.

Krause also recruited many of the faculty still active today, which cemented a strong research culture within the department of physics. Currently, Krause holds the title of professor emeritus and lives in the Windsor area.
