The English department is sponsoring a reading by two poets with connections to Detroit — Dennis Teichman and Tyrone Williams — at the Common Ground Art Gallery on Saturday, January 20.

English professor Louis Cabri organized the event in collaboration with Fall 2017 writer-in-residence Donato Mancini; it is, in effect, the last event of Mancini’s residency.

“Students sometimes overlook, due to their stressful schedules, how lucky we are to have cultural events available to attend,” Dr. Cabri says. “Cultural events organized by the English department and other departments, and groups such as the Humanities Research Group, are reminders to come out and experience new thinking and relations.”

Teichman is a retired operating engineer and Detroit area writer. Over the past decades he has been co-publisher of Detroit River Press; radio host of WDET’s Dimension, a program featuring writing and music; and a co-founder and publisher of Past Tents Press, a press dedicated to publishing Detroit area writers. He has two books of poetry, Edge to Edge, and V-8.

Williams teaches literature and theory at Xavier University in Cincinnati, Ohio. He is the author of several chapbooks and five books of poetry: c.c., On Spec, The Hero Project of the Century, Adventures of Pi and Howell. A limited-edition art project, Trump l’oeil, was published by Hostile Books in 2017. A new book of poetry, As Iz, is forthcoming from Omnidawn Publishing in fall 2018. Saturday’s reading is free and open to the public. It will begin at 4 p.m. in the gallery, which is located in the Mackenzie Hall Cultural Centre, 3277 Sandwich Street.
