Displays in the Leddy Library for the month of November celebrate 35 years of campus community radio at the University of Windsor.
Curated by CJAMfm staff, the showcase includes memorabilia and artifacts of the station’s original broadcasting equipment and tells its story, highlighting its pre-FM history (which dates back to the early 1950s), the transition to FM, the annual Pledge Drive, the 2009 frequency change, and the 2014 power increase.
“When CJAM hit the FM airwaves in 1983 it became a notable training ground for students,” said Brady Holek, CJAM station manager. “Many successful broadcasters had their start at CJAMfm while attending the University of Windsor, most notably the voice of the Toronto Maple Leafs, Joe Bowen.”
CJAM currently offers a wide range of programming designed for and hosted by students. In addition to enhancing the University of Windsor student experience, the station also offers free instruction to interested community members in the art of radio and producing.
“Anyone can walk through CJAM’s doors with any amount of experience and not only learn about what we do, but become a part of the organization,” said Holek. “We foster a community of people who are different yet come together for one purpose — our love of broadcasting and bringing new music, views, and news to the Windsor-Detroit area.”
The CJAM historical displays will be showcased in the main lobby and information area at Leddy Library for the month of November. Learn more about CJAM and the history of radio broadcasting at Leddy Library.
