Afrofest opened a week’s worth of cultural and educational activities with a ceremony Monday at noon in the CAW Student Centre.
In observance of February’s African Heritage Month, the festival celebrates the contributions made by peoples of African descent to the world, says co-ordinator Latavia Lewis.
“This is our 14th Afrofest at the University of Windsor and we want to keep the tradition thriving,” she said. “The week will consist of various cultural and educational activities in the form of visual art, music, panel discussions, guest speakers, film, fashion, food, dancing, spoken word and so much more.”
Events run through Friday, Feb. 8. Among the highlights are:
- The Black Market, offering goods for purchase from noon to 4 p.m. Wednesday and 1 to 4 p.m. Thursday, in the student centre Commons
- Know Your Rights, a seminar led by a police officer and a lawyer, at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Alumni Auditorium
- Get Bizzy, a dance class with choreographer Bizzy Boom, at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Movement Room, Jackman Dramatic Art Centre
- Afrodisiac, a ’90s-themed dance party at 10 p.m. Friday at the Imperial nightclub, 285 Ouellette Ave.
