Armouries to sound local note in cross-country melody

The SoCA Armouries will host hundreds of singers for a musical event that will resound across Canada today — Monday, May 6.

Music Monday, an annual national event celebrating the importance of music, especially in schools, dates to 2005.

The highlight is a simultaneous performance of one song from coast to coast to coast. This year’s selection is Hymn to Freedom, with music by Oscar Peterson and lyrics by Harriette Hamilton. Hundreds of thousands of children, educators, and community members are expected to join.

In Windsor, about 300 students from elementary and secondary schools will join the UWindsor Chamber Choir and members of the Windsor Symphony Orchestra Chorus under the direction of Bruce Kotowich.

The program will be live-streamed with performances starting at noon, culminating in the Hymn to Freedom at 1 p.m. Catch the streamed concert through YouTube.
