Grad to advise Ottawa on management of environment and sustainable development

UWindsor grad Jerry V. DeMarco (BA 1990) will provide independent analysis and recommendations on the federal government’s efforts to protect the environment and foster sustainable development in his new role as commissioner of the environment and sustainable development in the Office of the Auditor General of Canada.

DeMarco took on the job at the beginning of February after serving in a similar capacity for the Ontario government.

In announcing the appointment, auditor general Karen Hogan called him a leading Canadian expert with over 25 years of experience in the field of environmental policy and law.

“I look forward to working with Mr. DeMarco to carry out those aspects of the auditor general’s mandate that relate to sustainable development and environmental management in government, and to continue integrating the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals into the work of my office,” she said.

The position of commissioner of the environment and sustainable development was established in 1995 and is responsible for:

  • monitoring sustainable development strategies of federal departments;
  • overseeing the environmental petitions process; and
  • auditing the federal government’s management of environmental and sustainable development issues.

After graduating from the University of Windsor, DeMarco earned a law degree from the University of Toronto and Master’s degrees in environmental studies (York), management (McGill), and science (Toronto). He also holds a diploma in French studies from the Université de Savoie and certificates in adjudication and alternative dispute resolution. He is a member of the Law Society of Ontario and a Registered Professional Planner and member of the Canadian Institute of Planners.
