High school students gathering at Sandwich First Baptist Church today will learn about its role as a terminus of the Underground Railroad.
The event is hosted by Assumption University as its 2023 entry in the annual Fr. Joe Quinn Social Justice Series.
The day will begin with a performance by Leslie McCurdy of her play The Spirit of Harriet Tubman, and continue with lessons on the historic church and its role helping individuals fleeing slavery.
Located at 3652 Peter St. and tracing its origins to 1840, Sandwich First Baptist Church is the oldest active Black church in Canada.
