Extreme winter temperatures call for counter-measures

Be sure to have your mittens and toques on hand as forecasters are calling for a cold week ahead.

The Windsor-Essex County Health Unit issued a Cold Warning on Monday as temperatures reached -18C. A Cold Warning is issued when temperatures reach -15C without the windchill for one day.

The health unit warns that everyone is at risk from the cold, however, older adults, infants, young children, people who work outdoors, and people with pre-existing heart conditions or respiratory illnesses are more susceptible to cold-related injuries such as hypothermia and frostbite.

Temperatures are expected to continue below freezing this week. The health unit recommends covering as much exposed skin as possible and dressing in layers with a wind and water-resistant outer layer as well as hats, mittens, and scarves.

Other ways to combat the cold include limiting time spent outside and drinking warm fluids.
