The Essex County Chinese Canadian Association will host events to celebrate the lunar new year.
Community events hosted by the Essex County Chinese Canadian Association will celebrate the lunar new year, which begins Jan. 29.
In the Chinese zodiac, this is the year of the snake, associated with wisdom, charm, elegance, and transformation.
The local activities include:
A free public celebration from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 2, at the Devonshire Mall, outside the Bay store. The festivities will open with a traditional dragon dance followed by demonstrations of Chinese Canadian arts and culture — highlighting dance, music, calligraphy, and a children’s arts and crafts corner.
A gala dinner set for Saturday, Feb. 22, at the Ciociaro Club of Windsor, located at 3745 North Talbot Rd. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the program begins at 6:30. with dinner starting at 7:30.
In addition to a 10-course dinner, the evening will feature a dragon dance and other cultural performances, a photo booth, music, and dancing. The event is the association’s largest annual fund-raising event and promises door prizes, raffles, and a silent auction, with proceeds supporting programing through the year.
