Students begin final examinations

A semester’s worth of preparation will reach its culmination over the next two weeks, as students in all programs write their final examinations.

Mohsan Beg, director of the Student Counselling Centre, says it’s his busiest time of year – but he wouldn’t want it any other way.

“If students are feeling stressed out, we want them to know they can come and talk to somebody,” he says.

He says young people have many stressors and their effects can be cumulative.

Professors bid farewell to exchange students

Kinesiology professor Jess Dixon single-handedly convinced Alle Koperdraad to come to Canada.

“He gave two lectures in the Netherlands last year, and they were very interesting,” said Koperdraad, a sports marketing student at Amsterdam’s Johan Cruyff Institute. “I was looking for a new experience, and learned we had an exchange agreement with the University of Windsor.”

Keynote speaker to put listeners’ heads in the clouds

Cloud computing can foster innovation, stimulate collaboration and enhance service, says John MacDonald.

The senior account enterprise manager of Google Canada will discuss the rise of cloud computing and why implementing cloud solutions can enhance security and maintain privacy in a keynote address at Campus Technology Day, May 17.

During his three years with Google, MacDonald has helped large Canadian enterprises understand Google’s philosophy and its roadmap for innovative technologies.

Hoodie-wearing students stand in solidarity with slain Florida teen

Chanting “Justice for all” and wearing hooded sweatshirts, a group of law students and faculty rallied against racial profiling Wednesday outside the law school.

Organized by the Windsor chapter of the Black Law Students’ Association, “Hoodie Day” represented a stand in solidarity with the family of Trayvon Martin, said spokesperson Nana Yanful.

Cake celebrates 10,000 likes for University’s Facebook profile

Nothing says “let’s celebrate!” like free cake, says Alisa Giroux-Soulliere, and reaching 10,000 likes on Facebook is something to celebrate.

“It shows the sense of community that surrounds the University,” she said.

Social media coordinator in the Office of Public Affairs and Communications, Giroux-Soulliere presided over the distribution of about 200 pieces of cake Wednesday in the CAW Student Centre.

“People were happy to get the cake and the students said it was a cool tie-in for the last day of classes,” she said.

Gala honours Lancer achievements on and off the field

She’s going to need a bigger trophy case.

Miah-Marie Langlois received the Banner Shield as the University of Windsor’s top female athlete of the year at the Evening of Excellence banquet highlighting Lancer accomplishments, Wednesday at the St. Clair Centre of the Arts.

The women’s basketball star was a multiple winner on the evening, as was her male counterpart, Matt Walters of the cross country and track teams.

Student heroes collect a ton of food for needy

Dozens of residence students hit the streets of Windsor last weekend, collecting 3,400 pounds of non-perishable goods to stock local food banks.

“It’s not acceptable that many people are faced with not knowing where or how they are going to eat each day,” said residence life coordinator Lynn Charron, one of the organizers of the day of action sponsored by the Higher Education Reaching Out (HERO) Project.

“With food banks not being able to keep up with the demand, it’s time that we reached out and gave our neighbours a helping hand.”
