Student feminist publication issues call for submissions

The Women’s Studies Student Association is accepting submissions for its third annual Are We There Yet? a feminist publication composed of creative writing, poetry, art, photography, personal narratives and essays by students.

This year’s theme is “Resistance: Rethink, Relearn, Resist.” The deadline for submissions is February 1; e-mail wssa@uwindsor.ca. More information is available on the association’s Web site.

New GLIER director hopes to unite campus environmental researchers

Over the next five years, Dan Heath hopes to unite the wide variety of researchers across campus studying environmental issues.

“I really want to expand the role of environmental research at the University of Windsor,” said Dr. Heath, a biology professor who takes over as the new director of the University’s Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research in May.

Concerts to showcase student soloists

Top music students will take to the stage to compete for a $500 award on Sunday, January 15, in Assumption University Chapel at 2:30 p.m.

Student musicians representing each instrument group were invited to compete for the Ron W. Ianni Memorial Scholarship in Performance by receiving the highest grades in the December performance juries. The award is open only to full-time students enrolled in a music degree. It was established by Mina Grossman-Ianni and the School of Music in 2005 to honour the late president of the University of Windsor.

New food concept aiming to make campus tastier

An outlet serving the savoury filled pastries opened Monday in the Toldo Health Education Centre, adjacent to the Bru. The pastries are available in a variety of fillings – from steak to vegetarian – grilled fresh for each customer, and come with a choice of dipping sauces.

New wireless network to connect residence students

Students living on campus will experience a more “at home-like” connection to the internet, thanks to a new wireless network just for them.

UWindsor_Residence features more ports and increased throughput for a “more open” feeling than other campus wireless connections. Residence students will find the network listed as “uwindsor_residence” on their wireless devices.

Singer to discuss struggles with mental illness

One of Canada’s best-known entertainers will take to the stage at the University of Windsor on Monday, January 16, but don’t expect him to perform his usual material.

In an Evening with Steven Page, the former Barenaked Ladies frontman will discuss his own struggles with mental illness battling depression and manic episodes. A singer and songwriter, Page sold millions of records with the band he co-founded in 1988; he left in 2009 to pursue a solo career that has produced three albums to date.
