Reception today to celebrate teaching excellence

Students, faculty, and staff are reminded that the seventh annual Celebration of Teaching Excellence is scheduled for 4 p.m. today—Wednesday, November 14—in the CAW Student Centre's Ambassador Auditorium.

The event, jointly hosted by the Office of the Provost and the Centre for Teaching and Learning, will highlight the achievements and initiatives of faculty who have received international, provincial, and campus-wide awards.

Girls’ night out promises poetry reading

The Art Gallery of Windsor’s monthly art lounge will have a University flavour Thursday, as instructor Marty Gervais hosts and two of the three featured poets are UWindsor alumnae.

“Girls Night Out” will feature Kate Hargreaves (BA 2010, MA 2012), Vanessa Shields (BA 2002) and Melanie Janisse reading humorous works dealing with everything from roller derby to pregnancy.

Patrons will also have an opportunity to tour current exhibitions “Paris/Ojibwa” by Robert Houle, “The Wildcraft” by Kika Thorne, and “Mean Machines” by John Scott.

Still time to adopt a family for charity

With campus offices already having committed to helping about 30 families through the Children's Aid Society this holiday season, organizer Mary Anne Beaudoin reminds the university community that it’s not too late to join in.

The Windsor-Essex Children’s Aid Society developed the Adopt-a-Family program to ensure happy holidays for local children. The society asks sponsors to provide clothing and food to assist families through the holidays and beyond, in addition to toys.

Rights of temporary migrant workers the focus of forum

The Faculty of Law’s Transnational Law and Justice research group will host sociology and law professionals to examine issues of worker protection, human rights and immigration on Thursday and Friday, November 15 and 16 at the Ron W. Ianni Law Building.

The free public event, entitled “Temporary Migrants in Canada: Towards a Rights-Based Policy,” will include three panel discussions focusing on the rights, policies and legal issues affecting temporary migrant workers.

University’s Dearborn warehouse to close for U.S. Thanksgiving

The University’s warehouse in the United States will close Thursday and Friday, November 22 and 23, to celebrate US Thanksgiving.

Anyone expecting perishable shipments to come through the facility at that time should take measures to ensure they arrive no later than Monday, November 19, to ensure they clear customs for delivery to campus before the weekend.

Engineering building opens doors on innovative research

A showcase of engineering research Friday was a great opportunity for prospective students and members of the community to see first-hand some of the fascinating work that’s going on here, according to a participating professor.

“Everyone seemed really pleased with what they saw,” said Narayan Kar, one of three researchers who opened up their labs for the Open Doors, Open Knowledge event. “It’s critical that people have a good understanding of the kind of research we’re doing here.”

Library’s plan commits to leadership in learning

Student input helped to inform the strategic direction of the Leddy Library, says its dean Gwen Ebbett, and its focus on five key points.

The library recently unveiled its plan, which dovetails with the objectives of the University’s plan, Thinking Forward … Taking Action.

“In truth, it was not that difficult for us to come up with our goals,” Ebbett says. “We are already making movement on a number of these items.”

The plan lays out a course of action to:

Online repository to provide open access to UWindsor research

A new service of the Leddy Library will begin to bring together in one place the work done by UWindsor scholars.

The institutional repository Scholarship at UWindsor is intended to showcase campus researchers by providing open access to a wide range of their scholarly and creative works. This could include copies of published articles where permitted, conference papers, presentations, theses, videos of talks, musical scores, images and more, says Dave Johnston, the librarian heading up the project.

Leddy team joining Movember effort

A group from the Leddy Library is hoping to change the face of men’s health, and its members are putting their faces on the line.

Franco Magliaro, John Minos, Brian Owens, Joe Silvestri and Dino Spagnuolo have joined the Movember movement, growing moustaches through the month of November in an effort to raise awareness and funds in support of men’s health issues, especially prostate cancer.

“We were just talking one day and decided to combine our efforts as a team,” says Magliaro, captain of Mo Leddy. “We hope our colleagues will pitch in and make a donation.”
