Physicist honoured with Queen’s Jubilee medal

Recognition earned by William McConkey is a source of pride for the Department of Physics, the Faculty of Science, and the University of Windsor, says dean of science Marlys Koschinsky.

Dr. McConkey, University Professor emeritus in physics, received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal on Monday, June 18, at Toronto’s Roy Thomson Hall in the presence of the Governor General of Canada and the Lieutenant Governor of Ontario.

“This is wonderful news,” Dr. Koschinsky said. “Bill’s accomplishments are truly a great sources of pride for us.”

Grayce’s name was drawn from all respondents who correctly identified Epps as a sporting goods store, Hi Ho as famous for its curbside service, and Columbia and St. Claire as the Bob-lo Island steamers.

Students planning mobile bake sale Thursday

A team of fourth-year mechanical engineering students hoping to fund their capstone project are taking their show on the road Thursday, June 21, visiting campus offices door-to-door to solicit donations to their bake sale.

“We are going to spread out and hit every building,” says Abou Rkie. “We will offer our supporters a cookie for any donation they can make.”

The team’s project involves the addition of a solar panel to an electric wheelchair.

“The panel will provide extra power to the battery,” Rkie says.

Artists engage community to spell out how to reimagine Windsor

A group of artists from the collective Broken City Lab were busily creating a new installation in a courtyard in Windsor’s downtown core Tuesday afternoon. Known as a ‘text intervention,’ it consisted of a series of 12-inch high styrofoam letters, placed vertically on the ground to spell out the phrase “Hello New Friends.”

It caught the attention of a passenger in a car cruising past on Ouellette Avenue, who stuck her head out the window and waved.
