Hallowe’en social set for October 31

Now that October is here, the weather turns a little crisper, pumpkins start showing up at the supermarket, and young men’s fancies lightly turn to thoughts of ghouls.

Save the date and get your costume ready, the annual Faculty and Staff Hallowe’en Social is scheduled for Monday, October 31, noon to 1:15 p.m. in Vanier Hall's Winclare A.

All University of Windsor staff and faculty are invited to the event, which promises prizes for best individual and group costumes in addition to door prizes and a free luncheon, sponsored by the president's office.

Share your Thanksgiving: apply now for holiday host program

A call for participation in the Host for the Holidays program is generating more interest from prospective guests than hosts, say organizers.

The program matches international students far from home with Windsor families willing to share Thanksgiving dinner.

“We have a lot of students coming forward, interested in learning more about Canadian culture and celebrations,” says international student advisor Enrique Chacon. “I am worried that we may disappoint a lot of them unless we can recruit more hosts from the staff and faculty.”

Biology student braves hurricanes and sharks on remote Pacific island

Roberto Sosa has been to some remote corners of Mexico on his quest to learn more about the songs of the wren, but says nothing compared to the month he spent this summer tracking the birds on an isolated jungle island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

“In my personal experience, this was one of my best field seasons in terms of data collection,” said Sosa, a PhD student in associate professor Dan Mennill’s lab in biological sciences.

Student council seeking new management for Thirsty Scholar pub

Saying that chronic deficits in pub operations are putting a strain on its finances, the University of Windsor Students’ Alliance plans to issue a request for proposals to take over management of the Thirsty Scholar.

The pub has accumulated a debt of over a million dollars. Those losses have been covered by a series of interest-free loans from the UWSA, says president André Capaldi: “It is starting to interfere with our other priorities.”

Graduate Students' Society puts on the dog for members

Society president Ahmed Abou Gharam called it a great turnout and was excited to have so many members of faculty and administration attend.

“We also would like to acknowledge and give special thanks to the Alumni office for sponsoring the event, coming to the event, engaging the students and providing door prizes,” he said.

Field trip gives students hands-on experience with marvel of migration

More than 200 species of birds make the annual migration from Canada to the tropics. University of Windsor students had a chance to study 47 of them this weekend when they went on a full-day field trip as part of a third-year class in ornithology.

Almost 60 students watched migratory gulls and hawks at Point Pelee National Park, documented avian biodiversity at UWindsor’s Pelee Environmental Research Centre and banded migratory birds at Holiday Beach Conservation Area. Enthusiastic students were impressed to learn about the scale of the autumnal migration through Essex County.
