Reception to celebrate teaching excellence

The sixth annual Celebration of Teaching Excellence will pay tribute to the efforts of all educators on campus to inspire, engage, and enrich student learning, in the CAW Student Centre's Ambassador Auditorium, on Monday, November 14, at 4 p.m.

Hosted by the Office of the Provost and the Centre for Teaching and Learning, this year’s celebration includes:

Keeping BookFest fresh a key priority for organizer

From a first meeting with Lenore Langs, you might get the mistaken impression she’s not a big fan of dub poetry or graphic novels.

Whether she’s an avid consumer of those genres, however, seems irrelevant. As a key organizer of BookFest Windsor, her interest is in promoting literature in all its forms, and keeping the three-day event fresh and current is her number one priority.

Goudge Inquiry focus of sociology prof's lecture at forensic sciences centre

An invitation to speak to some of the top forensic scientists in the country will provide a UWindsor sociology professor with the chance to impress upon them that there’s a serious disconnect between the goals of social workers and the recommendations of a pediatric forensic pathology inquiry into the wrongful convictions of several Canadians accused of killing children.

Undergrad researcher studies link between smoking and breast cancer

By now most people are aware of the links between smoking and lung cancer, but they probably don’t know that cigarettes may contribute to breast cancer too.

Since August, fourth-year biology student Samantha Richardson has been feeding lab mice a mixture of corn oil, sesame oil and benzopyrene – just one of 50 carcinogenic chemicals found in cigarette smoke – and monitoring the effect on the animals’ mammary glands.

Gold medal winner grateful for chemistry prof's romantic alchemy

After eight years of hard work in Rob Schurko’s lab, Aaron Rossini has a BSc, a PhD and a Governor General’s Gold Medal to show for his efforts. And while he appreciates the educational opportunities working with the chemistry professor afforded him, it was Dr. Schurko’s subtle match-making abilities for which he’s probably most grateful.

Grad student helps launch drop-in centre for homeless youth

Tamara Kowalska was working downtown at the Milk Coffee Bar when a young girl came in and requested a glass of water, and then asked if there would be a charge for it. Kowalska quenched her thirst for free, and later that day while watching a documentary on homeless teens in the area, she recognized the girl was one of the subjects in the film.

Alumni Association calls for teaching award nominations

The University of Windsor Alumni Association is inviting nominations for the Alumni Award for Distinguished Contributions to University Teaching. The award is given annually at the Spring Convocation ceremonies to honour and recognize distinguished teaching on campus and to provide incentive and encouragement for achieving excellence in this field.

All full-time members of the teaching faculty, with a minimum of five consecutive years teaching at the University of Windsor, are eligible for nomination to the award.
