University Players logoUniversity Players has announced an eclectic line-up of plays for its 2013/14 season.

In the footlights

The University Players 2013/14 season promises a little bit of everything—hysterical comedy, poignant drama, thrilling mystery, and even theatrical fantasy.

The fast-paced farce Suite Surrender by Michael McKeever opens the season September 19 to 29. It’s 1942, and a swanky Palm Beach hotel is preparing for a wartime extravaganza performance with two of Hollywood’s biggest celebrities. But plans are thrown into chaos when the rivalling performers are mistakenly booked into the same suite! This award-winning comedy comes alive with mistaken identities, overblown egos, double entendres, and even a pampered little lap dog.

Taking the stage at Hallowe’en is a modern tribute to Agatha Christie by playwrights Marcia Kash and Doug Hughes. A Party to Murder runs October 24 to November 3. Six people arrive at a cabin on a private island for a weekend of harmless murder-mystery fun—until the game suddenly takes on a sinister reality. A 25-year-old unsolved mystery begins to haunt the proceedings and it becomes clear that all is not as it seems. Secret passageways and dead bodies propel this captivating tale towards an unexpected and terrifying conclusion.

A theatrical adaptation by Rufus Norris of the Brothers Grimm fairy tale Sleeping Beauty rings in the holidays November 21 to December 1. Once upon a time there was a beautiful Princess who was loved by everyone. Well… almost everyone. This gleefully gruesome retelling of the classic fable is told from the point of view of the mischievous, flatulent Fairy Goody, a smelly old sprite who casts a spell that sends Beauty into a deep sleep. Expect fairytale romance, hideous ogres, sinister spells, and a magical holiday show like no other!

In the footsteps of last season’s The Importance of Being Earnest, Oscar Wilde’s deliciously witty satire A Woman of No Importance runs February 6 to 16. Set amongst the splendour of an English estate, the play lays bare the moral inconsistencies of Victorian society. The devilish Lord Illingworth is keen to appoint young Gerald Arbuthnot as his personal secretary, but the revelation of a long-hidden secret forces them to face their pasts and admit some hard truths. This brilliantly biting comedy unfolds into a high class scandal, where all is to be revealed.

Anton Chekhov’s beloved masterpiece Three Sisters, March 6 to 16, brings us to a small village far from Moscow where a family longs to return to the life that they once had. The three sisters make every attempt to escape the cold and barren country life that they've been forced to adopt in favour of their warm and inviting past. This timeless classic is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the resolution to rediscover one's sense and purpose.

A comedy by Alan Ball, the Oscar-winning screenwriter of American Beauty, True Blood, and Six Feet Under, closes out the season April 3 to 13. Five Women Wearing the Same Dress brings us to an ostentatious wedding reception in Knoxville, Tennessee, where five reluctant and identically clad bridesmaids hide out in an upstairs bedroom, each with her own reason to avoid the proceedings below. These five very different women discover a common bond in this wickedly funny and sincere celebration of friendship and acceptance, sex, drugs, and wedding bells.

Prof shares miracle of deer birth

An engineering professor who woke up a little more than a week ago to find two baby deer had been born in her backyard figured some of the photos and video she captured was just too good not to share with the rest of the campus community.

“Just the sheer joy of seeing this was amazing,” said Jill Urbanic, a professor in the department of Industrial and Manufacturing Systems Engineering.

Urbanic, who lives in LaSalle not far from the Windsor Raceway, said she woke on the morning of June 8 to find a mother deer tending to her new fawns.

“They were still wet and she was nudging them a little to get up,” she said. “You can see how they were shaking.”

Urbanic said the deer spent most of the day in her yard, but eventually got up and followed the mother across the street and off into the nearby woods.

Global experts in electric vehicle technology gather for workshop

Experts from around the world will gather in the new Ed Lumley Centre for Engineering Innovation later this week to discuss the latest developments in electric vehicle technology.

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers will host an international workshop on electrified vehicle components and systems on June 20 and 21.

“Recent advancements in electric powertrain and energy storage design has created a great deal of momentum in the field, making an organized collaborative discussion a necessity for the academic community,” said Narayan Kar, a professor in the university’s department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and one of the conference’s key organizers.

Some of the speakers on the agenda include Daniela Chrenko of the Institut Supérieur de l'Automobile et des Transports in France, who will speak about the development of hybrid and electric vehicles in Europe; Yi Zheng of Hebei University in China, who will speak about motor control for electrified vehicles; and Gholam-Abbas Nazri of Frontier Applied Sciences and Technologies, LLC., in the United States, who will speak about energy storage systems for electric-based transportation.

The sessions will be held in room 1101 in the CEI, and all are welcome to attend. For more information, contact Dr. Kar at ext. 4796, or at nkar@uwindsor.ca.
