Sunset House a hub for campus retirees to connect

A house repurposed as a dedicated space for retired faculty and staff will provide a welcoming and functional space for all who enter its doors, says Gwendolyn Ebbett, president of the Windsor University Retirees’ Association.

“With Sunset House, the University of Windsor is reaffirming its commitment to its retired faculty and librarians — and indeed all retirees — by providing a dedicated space to connect, collaborate, and continue involvement with the university community,” Ebbett says.

Located at 360 Sunset Ave., Sunset House celebrated its grand opening Wednesday, featuring remarks by Ebbett, fellow WURA member Veronika Mogyorody, UWindsor president Rob Gordon, associate vice-president academic Erika Kustra, and academic initiatives officer Anne Mullen.

Following the formal program, guests toured the space, which includes large and small meeting rooms, individual workspaces, and a comfortable lounge area — all designed with accessibility in mind.

“The cross-campus team took a residential space and turned it into what promises to be a vibrant hub,” says Dr. Mogyorody, professor emerita of Visual Arts and the Built Environment and teaching and learning senior fellow in the Centre for Teaching and Learning.

“Not only will it be an age-friendly environment for our active WURA members, but it will hopefully provide a location that facilitates opportunities for social networks and promotes intergenerational interaction across the campus community.”

Initial activities in the Sunset House have included book clubs and social gatherings, with more events planned to foster engagement in the months ahead.

Lancers make history with four selected in CFL draft

Lancer football celebrated a historic milestone Tuesday, April 29, as four players were selected in the 2025 Canadian Football League draft, the most in program history.

Leading the way was linebacker Devin Veresuk, chosen second overall by the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, making him the highest-drafted Lancer in program history. Defensive back Istvan Assibo-Dadzie was picked 30th overall by the Toronto Argonauts, who also selected running back Joey Zorn with the 55th pick. Defensive lineman Liam Hoskins rounded out the group, going 43rd overall to the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Veresuk’s selection comes after an impressive collegiate career, where he amassed 160 total tackles, 14 tackles for loss, nine sacks, five pass knockdowns, two forced fumbles, and one interception returned for a touchdown. His performance earned him a spot in the CFL Scouting Bureau’s top 20 prospects and an invitation to the East-West Bowl.

Reflecting on his achievement, Veresuk said: “Being drafted is a dream come true. It’s a testament to the hard work and support from my coaches and teammates at the University of Windsor.”

Head coach J.P. Circelli expressed immense pride in his players’ accomplishments.

“This draft class is a reflection of the dedication and resilience our student-athletes have shown,” he said. “Their success elevates our program and inspires future Lancers to strive for excellence.”

In addition to the four current Lancers drafted, former Windsor defensive lineman Muftah Ageli was selected in the fourth round, 33rd overall, by the Ottawa Redblacks.
