Trivia contest offers tickets to music student showcase

The School of Music is offering DailyNews readers a chance to win two free tickets to the Ianni Performance Scholarship Competition, Sunday, January 15, in Assumption University Chapel at 2:30 p.m.

The concert features student musicians competing for a $500 scholarships named in honour of the late University of Windsor president. Find more information, including musicians’ photos, bios and program selections on the Web site of the School of Music.

Film shoot seeking extras

Have you always thought you ought to be in pictures? You may get your chance this weekend, as a University of Windsor graduate is seeking volunteers to act as extras in her first feature-length film.

Sarah Manschot (BA Communication Studies 2004) is shooting a scene in Erie Hall in the afternoon of Saturday, January 14. She is looking for people to fill the background. It is set in a film festival, so adults of all ages are welcome, but no children.

Concerts to showcase student soloists

Top music students will take to the stage to compete for a $500 award on Sunday, January 15, in Assumption University Chapel at 2:30 p.m.

Student musicians representing each instrument group were invited to compete for the Ron W. Ianni Memorial Scholarship in Performance by receiving the highest grades in the December performance juries. The award is open only to full-time students enrolled in a music degree. It was established by Mina Grossman-Ianni and the School of Music in 2005 to honour the late president of the University of Windsor.

New wireless network to connect residence students

Students living on campus will experience a more “at home-like” connection to the internet, thanks to a new wireless network just for them.

UWindsor_Residence features more ports and increased throughput for a “more open” feeling than other campus wireless connections. Residence students will find the network listed as “uwindsor_residence” on their wireless devices.

Singer to discuss struggles with mental illness

One of Canada’s best-known entertainers will take to the stage at the University of Windsor on Monday, January 16, but don’t expect him to perform his usual material.

In an Evening with Steven Page, the former Barenaked Ladies frontman will discuss his own struggles with mental illness battling depression and manic episodes. A singer and songwriter, Page sold millions of records with the band he co-founded in 1988; he left in 2009 to pursue a solo career that has produced three albums to date.

Forum to introduce high school students to engineering

The Faculty of Engineering will host an open house to welcome prospective students and their parents on Thursday, January 5.

Assistant dean Edwin Tam and a panel of past and present students will discuss the five academic programs, the new Centre for Engineering Innovation, and opportunities for scholarships and work experience.

High school students in attendance can enter a draw for $500 towards tuition at Windsor engineering.

It all begins at 6 p.m. at the University of Windsor / Chrysler Canada Automotive Research & Development Centre, 3939 Rhodes Drive.

The Masters of Social Work for Working Professionals program, run by the Faculty of Social Work and offered through the Centre for Executive Education, has reached a new northern milestone.  University of Windsor Residence Life Manager and M.S.W. candidate Nicole Clark has broken new ground for the school in completing her required practicum placement in Whale Cove, Nunavut.

What do people hope to find underneath their tree come Christmas? DailyNews asked some students and faculty to share their holiday wishes.

“I'd like to get anything that someone has put in the time and effort to make for me,” said Kate du Toit, a first-year student of digital journalism and communications. “It always means more than a store-bought gift, regardless of what it is.”

Concurrent education and math student Andrew Keller said he has asked his mom for three things: “Skyrim, a new alarm clock, and clothes.”
