Research Opportunities

We are currently recruiting Postdoctoral Fellows ($50,000 per year for 1 to 2 years), Research Associates, Ph.D. , and M.App.Sc. students for the design and implementation of intelligent systems for real-time multimedia signal and data processing applications. We look for talented candidates with (a) an engineering education background in any of electrical, electronic, communication, computer engineering or a related education background, (b) projects and undergraduate/graduate courses experiences in multimedia signal processing, computational intelligence, 5G digital communication systems, (c) proficiency in MATLAB programming, (d) proficiency in C programming, and (e) a minimum average of two regular papers per year published in reputable journals since Ph.D. graduation for Postdoctoral Fellows, a minimum average of one regular paper per year published in a reputable journal since Master graduation for Ph.D. students, and one short paper published in a reputable journal for M.App.Sc. students. Reputable journal papers published during Ph.D. and/or Master's studies will also be counted.

Examples of reputable journals for regular papers are IEEE Transactions and IET Journals. Examples of reputable journals for short papers are IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems II, IEEE Signal Processing Letters, and IET Electronics Letters.

Highly qualified applicants are welcome to join our exciting research program. We aim to review and respond within 7 days to an applicant who has met the above requirements and submitted relevant application documents (including a PDF copy of CV, transcripts, and IELTS or TOEFL report). If an applicant does not receive a response after 7 days, we wish the applicant success in considering openings from another professor.

Graduate Students

The ISPLab admits Ph.D. & M.A.Sc. students for terms starting in January, May, and September.

Admission requirements: An applicant is required: (a) To meet all the requirements for admission as a full-time Ph.D./M.A.Sc. student in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (including an academic background in Electrical/Electronic/Communication/Computer Engineering or a closely related Electrical Engineering discipline). (b) To have completed a research-based master's degree for Ph.D. applicants. (c) To have relevant course background (in digital signal processing, computational intelligence & deep neural networks, digital communications, optimization algorithms, digital design, and engineering mathematics). (d) To have a Canadian grade point average (GPA) of over 80% or grade A- or equivalent (for example, Bangladesh1, Nigeria 70%; India1, Pakistan2, 75%; Iran 17/20; China 87%; Saudi Arabia 3.75/4.00 or 4.75/5.00) in undergraduate transcript and graduate transcript for Entrance Scholarship and Research Assistantship considerations (Applicants with a lower GPA should have a minimum of one regular and one short papers published in reputable journals in one or more sub-areas related to our research area). (e) To have a score around 7.0 on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent (such as 94-101 on TOEFL ) for an international applicant whose native language is not English (Applicants with an IELTS score around 6.5 or equivalent should retake the test). (f) To be proficient in MATLAB and C programming. (g) To adhere to a high level of professionalism and diligence.

1 India and Bangladesh: Completion of both a Bachelor's (3-year) and a Master's or a Bachelor's degree requiring 4 years of study (e.g., B.Tech., B.Eng.).

Pakistan: Completion of both Bachelor's degree and Master's degree.

Cost & support: The current cost (tuition payable three terms per year, miscellaneous fees per term) for Ph.D./M.A.Sc. study can be checked from the Fee EstimateNote that the tuition fee of an international student is much higher than that of a Canadian student. Outside campus basic living expenses (food and room) are about $12,000 for 12 months. A Ph.D./M.A.Sc. student can apply for a Graduate Assistantship (GA) and can be selected for an Entrance ScholarshipThe current rate of GA support (maximum 2 GAs for 12 months) is posted on the Graduate Studies website. Spoken and written English are important considerations for a Graduate (Teaching) Assistantship appointment. The Entrance Scholarship is competitive and requires an admission application to be submitted at least four months before the desired starting term.

Research assistantship (RA): A RA from the Supervisor's research grant for a Ph.D. applicant can be up to $12,000 for the first year, renewable for a maximum of 3 additional years. To be eligible, additional requirements for a Ph.D. applicant include a minimum of two regular papers published in reputable journals in one or more sub-areas related to our research area. It is the applicant's role and quality of his/her journal papers listed on the resume that will be used to evaluate independent research ability/potential. The RA selection is competitive.

Self-support fund: The unavailability of a self-support fund could be the reason for rejecting (or not being able to respond positively to) an application from a highly qualified international student. A highly qualified international student applying for Ph.D./M.A.Sc. who is sponsored by a government/university/fellowship or who can self-support, should clearly state the total amount of available funds and sources in the initial email contact. The potential for a candidate's success in our research is most important, and a self-support fund does not guarantee acceptance.

Researchers (Postdoctoral Fellow/Research Associate & Visiting Scholar)

A highly qualified applicant should (a) have a mimimum average of two regular papers per year published in reputable journals since Ph.D. graduation in one or more sub-areas related to our research area; (b) have a score around 7.0 (but not lower than 6.5) on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent for an international applicant whose native language is not English; (c) be proficient in MATLAB and C programming; (d) adhere to a high level of professionalism and diligence.

Visiting Scholars sponsored by government/university are welcome.
