Setting Ecological Endpoints and Restoration Targets
The 2013 conference focused on progress in setting ecological endpoints and restoration targets for the Detroit River and western Lake Erie. Talks focused on candidate indicators that are data rich and have a sound scientific rationale for identifying quantitative targets and desired endpoints. Another focus was on the quantitative targets and endpoints that are being used to guide management programs like the Detroit River Remedial Action Plan, the Comprehensive Conservation Plan for the Detroit River International Wildlife Refuge, the Lake Erie Lakewide Management Plan, watershed management plans, and others. Each talk evaluated the current state of development of each proposed indicator against a set of criteria to assess its adequacy, utility, and relevance (e.g., scale/responsiveness, feasibility, standardized methods, responsiveness, etc.). The conference concluded with a panel discussion of next steps from both a science and management perspective.
