Pages within the Back-matter should appear in the following order:
Note: similarly to the Front matter, no particular style is recommended for the titles of pages within the Back matter section, however, the font and style of each title within the back matter must be consistent, for example, all titles in the same font size, centered on the page, in UPPERCASE, and in bold text (e.g. “REFERENCES”, “APPENDICES”, etc.).
In the Traditional format, there is a single References/Bibliography section that appears at the end after the body of the thesis, and can either precede or follow the Appendices.
In the Manuscript format, the References/Bibliography is NOT within the back-matter but within the thesis body, at the end of each chapter as individual chapter "References". The same citation style should be used throughout for each chapter References, regardless of the citation formats of the journals in which the individual manuscript included in the chapter may have appeared or will be published.
No particular style for references is recommended so students should consult their supervisors about the appropriate style for their discipline.
Any supplementary material that is not part of the thesis body may be included in the back-matter as an Appendix (or Appendices) to the thesis.
- Copyright releases from publications (if applicable) may be included as appendices.
- Remove any private information from appended materials, such as signatures, personal phone numbers, private addresses, etc. Publicaly available information such as office phone numbers and emails may remain and do not need to be removed.
- Do not re-start the page numbering at the beginning of appendices. If appendices include material taken from other sources on which page numbers already appear, they must also carry page numbers conforming to the sequential page numbering of the thesis or dissertation.
- Note that in both the Traditional and Manuscript format any Appendices must be placed in the back-matter (after the main thesis body) and not as individual chapter "Appendix" after each chapter in the main thesis body.
- While it is acceptable to place tables, figures or other illustrative chapter-relevant material at the end of each chapter (instead of grouped together in an "Appendix" within the back-matter), if placed at the end of a chapter they cannot be titled as an "Appendix". The chosen placement should consider readability as well as disciplinary guidelines - check with your research supervisor for advice on your program’s preferred style. For readability and cohesiveness any larger full-text supplementary material should be placed in the back-matter grouped under an "Appendix" (or several "Appendices") instead of within the thesis body/chapters. If an appendix in the back-matter is only applicable to a certain chapter, you may specify that in the appendix title, e.g. "Appendix A: Supplementary material for Chapter 3", etc.
The Vita Auctoris ("life of the author") is a required thesis element, however, there are no specific restrictions about its layout or contents. It normally includes as a minimum:
- The thesis author's name.
- Education and degrees.
Other information may be included that is directly related to the thesis or academic discipline (e.g., list of student’s publications/conference presentations resulting from their thesis research, etc.).
- For privacy concerns, students should not include private information such as home address and phone numbers, full date of birth, etc.
- The Vita Auctoris page must be the last page of the document, it must be assigned a number and listed in the Table of Contents.
- The title of the Vita Auctoris must be formatted using the same style (e.g. same font type and font size, etc.) as the titles of the rest of the back matter sections (e.g. References and Appendices)
- Examples can be found under Page Samples.
