Associate Vice-President, Student Experience Search

We are pleased to announce Dr. Shetina Jones’ appointment to the position of Associate Vice-President, Student Experience at the University.  

Dr. Jones is an accomplished and award winning post-secondary administrator who brings 15 years of progressive leadership experience in student affairs. Her career path includes roles as the Dean of Students and the Director of Continuing, Leadership in Management and Business at Wilberforce University, Senior Associate Director of Residential Living and Learning at Texas A&M-Commerce,  and her current role as the Director of Student Success and Graduate Opportunities at the University of Detroit Mercy. An educator with an expertise in higher education and student affairs, Dr. Jones has worked with academic leaders and faculty across campuses to advance the understanding and support of student experiences and needs, with a particular focus on supporting equity.

She has also demonstrated a commitment to service, having held leadership positions in national and international student affairs and student experience associations. Her deep experience working alongside student organizations has demonstrated her understanding of concerns and priorities of student organizations and the students they represent. She brings a relational approach to leadership and her work with students, always prioritizing equity, diversity, inclusion and justice in her work.

Her critical lenses and impressive track record as a leader in student affairs speaks to what we heard our community tell us they needed in this leader,” said Dr. Patti Weir, Interim Provost and Vice-President Academic.

Dr. Jones also brings a strong academic background to her leadership roles in higher education, having received her Ph.D. in Educational Administration in Higher Education Leadership, where she published a dissertation titled, “I deserve to be here”: High-achieving Black Women at HBCUs in STEM majors or fields.  Dr. Jones has co-authored several articles and book chapters. Her depth of administrative experience, coupled with her academic expertise will be a terrific asset to the University.

I can’t wait to get to know the community and get to work,” said Dr. Jones upon her appointment.

Dr. Jones will begin her role as Associate Vice-President, Student Experience starting on May 15, 2023.
