In order to try and make this process as simple as possible we have put together some guidelines for you to follow which you can find on Volunteer Information sheet (link to PDF) available on this site. Basically, once an announcement has been made seeking a volunteer you will either be asked to follow up with the Instructor or e-mail notetaker@uwindsor.ca.
This answer depends a lot on how the instructor decides to handle the request for note taking. Some instructors prefer to facilitate note taking directly and not involve SAS. However, we still encourage volunteers to sign up with our office by e-mailing notetaker@uwindsor.ca so that if another student requires your service we can put them in touch with you.
In some instances, instructors may prefer that Student Accessibility Services handle the coordination of note taking in which case it should be made clear to you that you will need to e-mail the address above.
If there is a student who requires your service, they will be provided with your uWin contact information. As soon as you volunteer you have consented for that information to be shared with the student.
If this is not something that you are comfortable with, we ask that you not volunteer. If you do volunteer but then decide this is not the right opportunity for you, contact notetaker@uwindsor.ca and request that we discontinue the use of your information.
The short answer is: yes. In some courses in which you have chosen to volunteer there may be more than one student who requires the services of a note taker. Should that be the case, we will provide your name and UWin. e-mail address to the students who require it and they are then to contact you about a plan for exchanging notes.
First, it is important to note that one of the surest ways to improve your own notes and note taking skills is to share them with another student.
Second, there are tips and strategies such as the Cornell Note Taking Method that you can use to help improve your note taking skills.
At the end of the term, if all has gone well and we have a record of your volunteering, you can e-mail notetaker@uwindsor.ca and request a letter of recognition for the services you provided.
