Student Accessibility Services Overview
Student Accessibility Services (SAS) is here to help students who have documented disabilities with accommodation, support and advocacy. The SAS department, in collaboration with others, strives to create a barrier-free environment that promotes an equitable student experience.
Please complete an Intake Form (if you need assistance, please email sas@uwindsor.ca)
Once you submit the intake form, an advisor will contact you to set up a meeting to discuss your accommodation needs. You will have the choice of meeting in-person, or online via Microsoft Teams.
Classroom accommodations
- Provide students with disabilities equitable access to learning. These accommodations are specific to the individual needs of students.
Exam accommodations
- Adjustments made to the testing environment to provide students with disabilities equal opportunity to demonstrate knowledge and skills. These accommodations are individualized based on the functional limitations of the students disability.
Temporary Accommodations
- Are approved on a term-by-term basis related to medical documentation. They are finite as the student is expected to make a full recovery.
Verification of a disability which is protected grounds in the Ontario Human Rights Code, provides information about the student’s disability and their functional limitations to aid the advisor in assisting with the creation of an Academic Accessibility Plan.
Consistent with guidance found in the Policy on Accessible Education for Students with Disabilities (2018) by the Ontario Human Rights Commission (OHRC), students are NOT required to disclose their Mental Health diagnosis to receive academic accommodations.
Disability documentation may need to be updated over time to ensure that accommodations and plans continue to address the functional limitations imposed by the disability.
Learning Disability: Will require a psychoeducational assessment completed within the last 5 years or has adult scales used.
Mobility Impairment Documentation
Questions about documentation can be addressed by making an appointment with your advisor or via completion of the intake form, in order to help navigate the medical with you.
