4 Ways Advent in 2020

Written by Chrisandra Skipper

The whole world seems to be in full-blown Christmas mode! But come on, who doesn’t want the ultimate joyful-cheery season to take over the rest of this year? I personally have all my Christmas decorations up, seasonal coffees frequently, and Hallmark Christmas movies playing!

There are a few things that I’m doing to remember the season of Advent and the important opportunities it brings for us to focus on hope, joyful expectation, and prayerful penance. We’re a few days into the beautiful season of Advent, but it’s not too late to incorporate some Advent things into your life the next few weeks!

Here are a few Advent things I’m doing this year:

  1. Advent Wreath: Among the stockings and tree, I have our advent wreath set up. We’re using the one we made form the Campus Ministry advent package this year. If you don’t have one, you can make one too. Learn more about Advent Wreaths here.
  2. Giving: Many traditional forms of fundraising and giving are different or cancelled this year. The need is greater than ever though. While your Churches traditional Giving Tree may not be happening or fundraising event may be cancelled, there are many ways to give this year. We’re participating in our Church’s adapted giving tree by dropping off gift cards instead of specific items this year. You can also reach out to your St Vincent de Paul Society or favourite charity to see how you can give to them!
  3. Music: There are definitely a lot of Jingle Bells and Rudolphs being sung and danced to around the Skipper house, I’ve found a few really beautiful Christian playlists that I listen to during the day. Here are a couple of my favourites from Spotify: Advent Worship  |  Advent Songs by Daily Grace Co.
  4. Prayer: I talked a bit on IG stories the other day about my theme for my Advent prayer this year. (Bold Hope) There are so many awesome and FREE daily devotionals for Advent. These are awesome because they get emailed to you every day. Here are a couple you can still sign up for:

We know you’ve got finals and family and all sorts of things that demand your time and attention in December. Try to make time for Advent this year. Let us know on social media what you’re doing for Advent this year!
