Moving In? Here's What to Bring!

What to Bring

Your assigned house will be your home for the next semester or longer! Make it a comfortable space that expresses your personality. However, it is not wise to bring everything you own, given the limitations of your room size. You may want to bring some of the following:

  • Bath towels, bathrobe, and flip flops for the shower
  • Toiletries
  • Clothing and hangers
  • Laundry detergent and a laundry bag or hamper (collapsible hampers are easiest for up and down stairs and storing in small spaces)
  • Alarm clock
  • Computer/laptop and headphones
  • Backpack/school bag and school supplies
  • Electrical power bar
  • Necessary identification (drivers license, health card, insurance papers, etc.)

What NOT to Bring

The following items are absolutely prohibited in any Canterbury property. Prohibited items will be confiscated and held at the office if found in common areas:

  • Candles and incense
  • Pets
  • Pressure Cookers or Instant Pots
  • Cigars, marijuana, pipes, hookahs or shishas, bongs, e-cigarettes, vapes or smoking paraphernalia of any kind.
  • Illegal drugs, substances, or drug paraphernalia
  • Open heat source appliances (heaters or heat lamps)
  • Large speakers and big stereo systems
  • Firearms and other weapons including paintball guns, B.B. guns, or replicas, or anything that could be considered a weapon
  • Drones
  • Firecrackers, gunpowder, flammable solvents, or other forms of explosive or volatile materials
  • Containers of alcoholic beverages made for mass consumption, i.e. kegs, swish barrels, four-litre cans, Texas mickeys, mini-kegs, etc.
  • Paraphernalia used in unsafe alcohol consumption, i.e. funnels, beer bongs.

Internet Access
All Canterbury Houses and Apartments are equipped with BASIC high-speed wireless internet. If the internet supplied by Canterbury is insufficient for your needs, you will need to supply your own additional internet at your own expense. Students agree to comply with the computer policies of the University of Windsor.

Air Conditioning
Central air conditioning is available in Augustine, Becket, Cranmer, Laud, Parker, Wake, Whitgift, and Canterbury Commons. The houses without central air are closed during the summer. Tenants of GFH may rent a window air conditioner from Canterbury between May through September. Any rental units will be installed and uninstalled by Canterbury staff. Students are also welcomed to bring their own window units if they have one. An Energy Surcharge of $25 per month will be charged for any AC unit use, whether the unit belongs to the tenant or Canterbury.
