Sonnets:  A Brief History
“With this key / Shakespeare unlocked his heart,” Wordsworth said of the sonnet. As a literary form transcending language and time, the sonnet continues to be a common creative ground for poets of all ages. This course will be an introduction to both tradition and innovation in the sonnet form, with examples drawn from different periods of English literary history. Authors canvassed may include Spenser, Sidney, Shakespeare, Lady Mary Wroth, Milton, Charlotte Smith, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Keats, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Charles G.D. Roberts, Yeats, and Heaney. Attention will be paid to how language, metre, rhyme, and structure all work to produce meaning in a literary form whose reach goes beyond the unlocking of the heart.
