Before beginning any experiment, identify the types of waste that will be produced. Waste must be segregated according to hazard class (such as flammable, corrosive, toxic, or oxidizing) and chemical compatibility. Further separation is required based on chemical composition—for example, organic versus inorganic waste, oxidizing acids versus non‑oxidizing acids, and halogenated versus non‑halogenated solvents. Consult the Hazardous Waste Disposal Guide for detailed information on required waste stream segregation, and contact the Hazardous Materials Technician (HMT) if additional guidance is needed.
Use only waste containers supplied by the CCC. Containers must be compatible with the materials placed inside, kept in good condition, and tightly closed when not in use. Do not overfill any waste container. Surplus chemicals intended for disposal should remain in their original containers.
Each container must have a Hazardous Waste tag, or an approved equivalent, attached. As soon as the container is put into service, complete the contact information, start date, and description of contents. Use full chemical names with approximate concentrations—no formulas or abbreviations.
Store liquid waste in a secondary container that is large enough to contain the full volume of a potential spill. Ensure waste is stored according to chemical compatibility, and never place incompatible materials in the same secondary container. Inspect temporary waste accumulation areas regularly. Do not store waste for more than 90 days, even if the container is not full.
Proper personal protective equipment must always be worn when handling or transporting hazardous waste. Use a spill‑proof cart or secondary containment when moving waste within a building. When transporting waste between floors, use a freight or chemical elevator—never a passenger elevator.
While all personnel are responsible for following proper waste‑handling procedures during their work, Supervisors, Principal Investigators, or their delegates should appoint a Representative to oversee final waste disposal through the CCC. This Representative should be an experienced technician, postdoctoral fellow, or graduate student—never an undergraduate student. The Representative will work with the HMT to ensure appropriate collection systems are in place for their group’s needs, routinely inspect these systems, arrange for disposal through the CCC, and ensure that all group members understand the established collection and disposal procedures.
Waste is collected directly from the lab. Email ccc@uwindsor.ca with the type, quantity, and location of the waste requiring pickup. Ensure all waste labels are complete and accurate. Full containers will be exchanged for empty ones, and additional containers are available upon request.
The satellite waste accumulation site is located in the Biology Stock Room (Room 316). Waste must be delivered in person to a Stock Room Technician during regular operating hours. Follow all required safety precautions when transporting waste within the building. Additional waste‑handling supplies are available from the Biology Stock Room. For disposal of non‑standard or special waste items, contact the CCC directly.
The satellite waste accumulation site is located in Room 1197 CEI. To arrange a delivery time or request additional waste supplies, contact David.Lee@uwindsor.ca or call ext. 2564. If David Lee is unavailable, please contact the CCC directly. Follow all required safety procedures when transporting waste within the building. For disposal of non‑standard or special waste items, reach out to the CCC directly.
The satellite waste accumulation site is located in the Lab Services Room (127). Place waste containers in the designated areas: non‑flammable waste in a secondary container on the shelf, flammable waste in the flammable cabinet, and large solid‑waste containers on the floor in front of the shelf. Ensure all containers and labels are properly prepared before transport and disposal. Follow all required safety precautions when moving waste within the building. Replacement supplies can be taken from the shelf as needed. Contact the CCC for any additional supplies or for disposal of non‑standard or special waste items.
