Ford Duratorq Research Engine

  • The Ford Duratorq diesel engine is a four-cylinder, common rail direct injection, light duty production engine modified to run as a single cylinder research engine.
  • The air supply, fuel supply, and exhaust of the first cylinder are isolated from the other three cylinders.
  • The first cylinder is used for research while the other three cylinders are used to motor the engine.
  • The motoring cylinders are operated under conventional diesel combustion.
  • The intake port of the research cylinder is equipped with two gasoline-type port fuel injectors.
  • The solenoid type direct fuel injector is part of a high pressure common rail fuel injection system with alternate fuel compatibility.
  • This engine is used extensively in low temperature combustion research.
