Caliban’s Ghost: Ethnoargumentation and the Assumptions of a Tradition
Abstract: In this talk, I introduce the project of Ethnoargumentation by way of distinguishing it from comparable ideas, like comparative rhetoric and cross-cultural argumentation and by exploring some of the assumptions of a dominant tradition that masks it (assumptions that once exposed encourage the project itself). If “we” are part of a dominant culture of argumentation, what are the implications for ourselves and others? Considering how others argue—what they count as evidence—helps expand our understanding of the nature of argumentation and should influence how we approach it and evaluate it.
