Cynicism vs. Hopeful Skepticism: Virtues, Mindsets, and Emotions in Argumentation
Abstract: This paper explores the contrasting mindsets of cynicism and hopeful skepticism within the framework of argumentation studies. Hample (2016) and Brockriede (1975) posit that arguments reside not merely in statements or text but also in individuals and their emotional landscapes and vicinities. Fundamentally, arguments are interpersonal wherein they are a source of making meaning and identity. From this point of departure, I examine the role of emotions in argumentation, addressing the debate over their potential to enhance or detract from rational discourse. By highlighting the merits of a hopeful skeptic mindset, the I argue for its adoption in educational contexts to foster critical engagement and promote virtues necessary for effective argumentation.
