The School of Creative Arts will ring Friday with a number of musical events.
At 10 a.m. in the Armouries’ Performance Hall, musicologist Gayle Murchison of College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia, will present her free public lecture “Listening to Mary Lou Williams in London: Race, Gender, and the Canon.”
Dr. Murchison contributed a chapter on Williams — jazz pianist, arranger, and composer — to the 2016 book Women’s Bands in America. Read more about this event.
UWindsor professor Brent Lee and the Electric Improv Lab will lead a workshop on structured improvisation at 2 p.m. in the Multimedia Studio, Freedom Way Building. The free session will include an overview of common approaches to structuring musical improvisations, with examples drawn from classical, jazz, electronic, and experimental music traditions.
Students are invited to bring an instrument and participate in a series of short structured improvisations. Learn more on the event website.
Music students will perform in a free public recital at noon in the Performance Hall as part of the SoCA Fridays series: Andrea Obeid, alto; Max Arvidsson, bass; Aaron Beaudette, baritone; Tulin Fadel, soprano; Matt Lepain, trumpet; Bonnie Trealout, clarinet; Logan Adlam, piano; and the Flute Choir.
The Performance Hall is also the setting of a recital at 7:30 p.m. featuring saxophonist Jeffrey Price, an instructor in the instrument at the University of Windsor, and pianist Ina Yoon, chair of the piano department at the Flint School of Performing Arts.
The event is free and open to the public. Find the full program and performer profiles on the concert website.
The SoCA Armouries is located at 37 University Avenue East. The Freedom Way Building is at 360 Freedom Way.
